Course Overview

Civil and structural engineering is one of the oldest forms of engineering and involves the design, construction, and maintenance of the built environment. Engineering professionals in this field are responsible for ensuring that the infrastructure around us gets developed, is safe, meets our needs, and improves our quality of life. This Undergraduate Certificate in Civil Engineering provides a practical and academically grounded introduction to one of the most essential engineering disciplines shaping modern society.

Graduates of this program will be able to:

  • Acquire fundamental knowledge, skills, and understanding of the key core units of the civil engineering discipline.
  • Demonstrate scientific, mathematical, contextual factors.
  • Demonstrate introductory design thinking applied to civil engineering applications.
  • Progress to further qualifications, with study pathways to a Bachelor of Science (Civil and Structural Engineering).

Program Details

This program is designed to equip you with foundational engineering knowledge and applied skills, enabling you to understand how engineering principles are used to solve real-world infrastructure challenges. You will explore the scientific and mathematical concepts that underpin civil engineering, while also gaining exposure to industry-relevant tools and practices such as engineering drawing, computer-aided design (CAD), and surveying.

By completing this course, you will develop a strong base for further study or entry-level roles within the engineering and construction sectors.

You must complete 12 credit points comprising four units. There are no electives in this program. The full-time program duration is six months over 1 semester (or part-time equivalent). For further study, graduates may consider EIT’s Bachelor of Science (Civil and Structural Engineering).

Please refer to the current teach-out program structure here.

Semester Unit Code Subjects Credit Points
Semester 1 BSC101 Engineering Mathematics 1  3
Semester 1 BSC104 Engineering Drawing and CAD   3
Semester 1 BCS202 Construction Engineering   3
Semester 1 BCS205 Engineering Surveying 3

Entry is available to applicants who hold one of the following:

  1. A Year 12 Australian Senior Certificate of Education (or equivalent for International Students), completed within the past 3 years, with a minimum score of 60% in Maths.
Applicants who have completed Year 12 (or equivalent for International Students) more than 3 years ago are required to also demonstrate 2 years of relevant work experience in the field of study applied for; OR
  2. A relevant Engineering AQF Certificate IV (or equivalent overseas qualification) with successful completion of all Maths units/modules and 2 years relevant work experience in the field of study applied for; OR
  3. An Engineering AQF Diploma (AQF Level 5) (or equivalent overseas qualification) with successful completion of all Maths units/modules.

English Language Proficiency Requirements:

Entry to this course requires demonstration of English language proficiency at the level of an IELTS overall score of at least 6.0 (with no individual band score less than 5.5).
The methods of satisfying these English language proficiency requirements are generally through (but not limited to):

  • An Australian Senior Certificate of Education or equivalent
  • A specified level of achievement in a recognised English language test, such as IELTS (or equivalent as outlined in the EIT Admissions Policy).
  • Satisfactory completion of another tertiary course offered in English
  • Work history in an organization where English is the language of communication

Note:
All applications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Please check the Documentation Guidelines for your application.

Like all Australian higher education providers and universities, EIT programs are accredited by the exacting standards of the Australian Government’s Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA). The Undergraduate Certificate is a new, formally recognized qualification that has been added to the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). Its indicative AQF equivalence is AQF level 6.

This course is classified as Level 6 under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).

The Undergraduate Certificate in Civil  Engineering is a pathway into the Bachelor of Science (Civil and Structural Engineering) , subject to meeting admission requirements and successful completion of the course. Students can receive up to 12 credits towards the Bachelor of Science (Civil and Structural Engineering) upon successful completion of the course, allowing you to continue your studies with advanced standing.

Potential job roles include engineering and management positions in the following areas of expertise:

  • Civil and structural planning, design and development
  • Building contracts, sales, commissioning and consultation
  • Building control and surveying
  • Site management
  • Water and waste management
  • Civil and structural operations and maintenance
  • Civil and structural project management and business development

Further study pathway with EIT would be the Bachelor of Science (Civil and Structural Engineering) -> Master of Engineering (Civil and Structural) -> Doctor of Engineering

Our undergraduate certificates take six months to complete full time. Students are expected to spend approximately 10 hours per week per unit learning the program material, completing assessment and attending tutorials. After enrolment the maximum time allowed to complete all units is 3 years.

Application Deadline:
You must submit your application at least four weeks prior to the start date to be considered for your desired intake.

Census Date:
A census date is the date at which an enrolment is considered to be final. Any withdrawal you make after the study period census date will incur an academic penalty (for example, a fail grade) and a financial penalty (for example, no refund of your student contribution or tuition fees). See our current census dates.

Any student has a right to appeal a decision of the Engineering Institute of Technology (EIT) or any member of the institute’s staff. EIT has a comprehensive Policy on Appeals and Grievances to assist students.

The delivery methodology and the information available in the e-library can’t be beaten. The other important aspect of online education is recorded lectures. You can review the tutorial and lessons on repeat when you need to understand the concept.
M Masemola, South Africa
What I liked most about the course and EIT is the flexibility is offered regarding education. It gave me the opportunity to study and work full-time.
C Groenewald, South Africa
I enjoyed interacting with students all around the world, and seeing how the principles I have learned applies to them as well.
S Zeelie, South Africa
My line of work requires me travel quite often. I could not attend every class due to my remote locations, but still I could recap and stay on top of the study material thanks to the recordings. Also, all the Instructors were world class.
